STAGE FLASH - SS9
(12/3/2005 1:00:00 PM)
Leg: 2 Saturday March 12th 2005
Stage: 9 (Derramadero - Chichimequillas 1)
Distance: 23.56 km
Weather: Dry and sunny
Road conditions: Hard with loose gravel and compressions
1. LOEB / ELENA
This year, I lifted on the jump but it was still a hard landing. So, it was good I was not going quicker!
2. DUVAL / PREVOT
They have advised me this morning to put harder springs on the car to get better grip but the road is too dirty and we are sliding all over the place. It is a pity I cannot attack because my pace notes are excellent. Note: Rear left tyre has no pressure.
3. GARDEMEISTER / HONKANEN
I have run the whole stage with no pressure in the rear right tyre because I had two punctures in the previous stage.
4. SOLÄ / AMIGO
I have had three punctures in SS8 and somewhere in this stage I have lost the mousse in the front right tyre. Note: Arrived with no front right tyre.
5. SOLBERG / MILLS
It is a very difficult stage. I was following the split times for Marcus trying to be a little bit quicker than him.
7. GRONHÖLM / RAUTIAINEN
I was a little bit cautious in this stage - this is better because it is very bumpy.
8. MÄRTIN / PARK
It is very bumpy. I was the only one to have the KM tyres and I have no idea if it was better or not!
10. PANIZZI / PANIZZI
The car is totally is totally impossible to control. I don’t know if the diffs are working or not.
12. PAASONEN / VAINIKKA
Careful!
15. WARMBOLD / ORR
Now it is much better. They told me I should drive this car in a straight line. I have done it this morning and I have lost 20 seconds. Now I know you have to be clean in the slow corners but everywhere else you really need to attack!
16. JOHANSSON / LINDSTROM
It is very slippery. We take it as learning day.
17. PONS / CRUZ
OK!
18. TRIVIÑO / DEL BARRIO
The engine stalled in one slow corner. I have lost a few seconds.
31. P-G ANDERSSON / ANDERSSON
I am bored. I just want to make it to the finish!
32. WILKS / PUGH
A very fast stage, but no problems.
COMMENTS
Derramadero-Chichimequillas starts at 2.351 meters on flowing open roads, peaking at 2,465 meters after 2.99 kilometres. It then flattens out in a very fast section before descending through a series of hairpins to the village of La Estancia at 10.30 kilometres. At 21.80 kms a fast downhill approach into a compression resulted in spectacular jumps and just 100 metres later a concrete culvert on a fast right hand corner may well have caught out some of the drivers.
The stage record set in 2004 by Petter Solberg is still intact at 13:47.5. The Norwegian was fastest through the stage again this year, setting a time of 14:03.1, and keeps his lead over second placed Marcus Gronholm at the end of the first loop. Markko Martin and Francois Duval stay in third and fourth place respectively and set second and fifth fastest stage times. Chris Atkinson’s impressive Mexican charge hit some problems in the stage. At the beginning, he clouted a rock and lost the power steering, then 10 kilometres further into the stage he hit a concrete wall and lost the front right wheel. However, he will restart tomorrow under the new 2005 regulations. Conrad Rautenbach stopped at the end of the stage with a broken engine mount.

SERVICE FLASH - D
(12/3/2005 2:00:00 PM)
Leg: 2
Saturday March 12th 2005
1. LOEB / ELENA
We’re trying to change the set-up of the car a bit; some diff settings – we are far behind now. We lose time also because we are cleaning the road. If the rally was one day longer, it would be better! I will try to gain a point.
2. DUVAL / PREVOT
There was no grip in SS8 or SS9. We are not sure what to do, it’s the shock absorbers. We need to adapt the car to my style.
3. GARDEMEISTER / HONKANEN
For me, it’s not so good at all. It’s so slippery, I cannot understand how to get better times. I feel better than yesterday but it’s very difficult.
5. SOLBERG / MILLS
The last one was OK. I lost a few seconds at the end being careful. There’s no point trying to take the whole gap in one stage. The engine temperature was 126 degrees on SS8 and it was quite panicky for a while! I was quite lucky, I must say.
7. GRONHÖLM / RAUTIAINEN
We have half solved the brake problem but at the end of the stages it was terrible. I took new brake pads with me from Service and I changed them after every stage. I don’t know what else we can do. We will see what the gap is after the next stages.
8. MÄRTIN / PARK
It was OK but there was a big stone we hit in SS8 – everyone did. The last one was quite difficult; quite rough. The time was good on SS9 but I drove the second stage a lot better. I don’t understand with this car sometimes. Now we should be OK with every tyre choice.
9. ROVANPERÄ / PIETILÄINEN
On the stage before, there was a rock which has broken the sump guard and I had to slow down. With the penalty this morning, I try to attack.
10. PANIZZI / PANIZZI
I’m sure there’s something broken; it’s getting worse and worse. The car is undriveable like this – I don’t know what we’re going to do.
15. WARMBOLD / ORR
Somebody told me to drive clean and stay in the line and on the first stage I was way too slow. The second one was better and the third one was good. But with my set-up, I don’t have traction and we’re trying to fix that. I am learning.
17. PONS / CRUZ
It’s a good feeling. Yesterday was fast, today is twisty. It’s very slippery but the car is no problem.
18. TRIVIÑO / DEL BARRIO
No problem, the car is very nice. We keep going at this speed.
32. WILKS / PUGH
We had a bit of a scary slide but generally we’ve kept it smooth. We lost the brakes 5-6 kilometres from the end of the last stage. We should have bled the brakes before. We’ve got a better lead now so we’ve got to keep concentrating.
