Päris karm ralli on tulemas.
World Championship leader Sebastien Loeb got a foretaste of what to expect from the Supermag Rally of Italy at this mornings shakedown and it didnt bode well for the Citroen-driving Frenchman.
Loebs second run at the four-kilometre test road was 20 seconds quicker than his first. He acknowledged that he made a small mistake at the first attempt, but it gave an indication of just how much the surface will clean during the rally itself. As Loeb is running first on the road in the first leg, he stands to lose time hand over fist. The one consolation is that nearest championship rival Petter Solberg is running second and the Subaru driver can therefore expect to drop time as well.
The state of the roads has been the main surprise for what amounts to a brand-new rally. It is the first time that Italys World Championship round has been held on Sardinia and the stages, most of them in privately owned forests, are exceptionally demanding.
Its very, very difficult: difficult to note, very narrow. You can hit a wheel so easily its that narrow, Loeb explained. I think its a very difficult rally to attack. Its a bit like Cyprus, but a lot more narrow and a lot of stones at the side of the road. I said to Daniel [his navigator Elena], I dont think it is possible to do this rally without a mistake.
Peugeots lead driver Marcus Gronholm the Cyprus winner on the road shares Loebs view.
I was expecting better roads, faster and nicer. Sometimes its like Cyprus, but fast parts also, the 307 driver said.
Gronholm experimented with different anti-roll bars, but finding the ideal set-up may not be easy, as the rally provides a range of conditions and there is minimal previous experience to draw upon. The surface is often sandy and it not only cleans quickly, but becomes rutted in places too.
The road changes faster than you can change the car, Citroens chief engineer Jean-Claude Vaucard commented.
Ford faces perhaps the toughest task of all. The BP-backed squad was the only four-wheel-drive works team not to test on the island and the team spent a hectic shakedown seeking a compromise between rough-road resilience and traction. Markko Martin and Francois Duval tried no fewer than three different shock absorber settings between them.

Petter Solberg is raring to go, but Subarus Norwegian star has been amazed by his first taste of rallying on Sardinia.
This rally is incredibly difficult. I have not seen anything like it. If you are a little bit sideways, you are finito! Honestly, it is so difficult: rocks everywhere. Everybody said it would be smooth and it is the worst Ive seen, Solberg said.
It will be good fun. Sebastien is on top form, but Markko Martin, Marcus Gronholm and maybe Harri Rovanpera can be quick, he added.
For once, Mikko Hirvonen finds that he has more experience of the region than his team-mate, but he promised that the Rally of Italy is distinctly different from any of the previous rallies he has contested on Sardinia.
I have to say the rallies I used to do here were much wider and easier, Hirvonen commented. These are much more difficult. The roads are so narrow. You have to be on the case. Second time through it will be rough and a lot of stones. Its kind of flowing. Its a mixture of Argentina, Cyprus and Greece. Some parts are just like El Condor.
Rivals suspect that Pirellis KM tyres will give Solberg an advantage in sandy conditions. Whether they compensate for starting second on the road remains to be seen.

Nagu näha on mõlemad masinad väga hea ajalooga, ainult üks katkestamine kahe auto peale, kuid lõpuni jõudes on alati kahe parema hulgas oldud

Kindlasti pole neil eelmise auto mootoreid enam. Need peaks olema selle aasta aeglaste mootoritega varustatud. Seega pole midagi nii roosilist.xaus kirjutas:Fordi autod Itaalias:
