Guenther Steiner, known for his outspoken leadership as former Haas F1 Team principal, has emphasised the need for strong personalities within the World Rally Championship to regain prominence comparable to Formula 1.

In an exclusive interview with Rallying UK, Steiner - whose extensive motorsport experience once included directing engineering for the Ford World Rally Team - argues that the absence of charismatic figures like those seen in the 1980s and 1990s has significantly reduced the WRC’s global media impact and appeal.

"I wish it would go back like it was in the 80s and 90s," Steiner said. "It was a big, great sport - followed by the media and everything."

Highlighting the critical role personalities play in attracting media attention, Steiner referenced the charismatic Finnish drivers of previous decades who regularly grabbed headlines and captivated audiences.

"I think the biggest thing, what we need to go back is to have big personalities in it," he explained. "You know, if you remember the good old days, all these Finnish drivers - they were big personalities and they made the headlines."

Steiner also challenged current WRC drivers to enhance their public profiles and engage more proactively with fans, urging them to become active contributors to the sport’s visibility rather than passive participants.

"At the moment, some of the drivers are just happy to drive a car and are not engaging anymore with the fans and the audience more than they need to," Steiner said. "I think everybody needs to stand up and say - 'I will add something to get us out there'. Some will succeed, some will not succeed - but I think that is the biggest thing that's missing."

Steiner acknowledged the technical and broadcasting challenges unique to rallying, recognising the difficulty in packaging the sport effectively for television.

"To prepare rallying for TV is not easy. But there must be a possibility with the technology, which exists now to do this." he noted.

Despite these challenges, Steiner praised rally drivers for their distinct talent, stating that rallying demands innate skill in ways that circuit racing does not.

"I think rally cars are still cool cars - and the drivers are very good," he asserted. "In circuit racing, you can learn a lot in circuit racing - but in rallying if you're good, you've got talent. You cannot learn what these guys do."

While Steiner admitted he does not have a definitive solution to restore WRC's former glory, he remains convinced a renewed focus on dynamic, headline-generating drivers could substantially boost the sport's international appeal.

"I wish it would go back, but I don't have the magic solution, but I think something can be done," Steiner concluded.

Mis seal siis halvasti oli?
Olin ise ka kohal, kõik sujus 100%.
Teed olid samad nagu Eestis. Parem oli see, et polnud teistest paremaid (VIP). Kõik olid võrdsed. Nagu ka Soomes.
Hinnad odavamad. Tsirkust vähem ja rallit rohkem.

Vaadates neid RE katseid siis midagi väga uut ei ole. Hellenurme katse on vana hea Raiga millele natu uuemat osa juurde pandud.

Artiklit pole jagada aga sõber lätlane kes töötab wrc sotsiaalmeediaga on jaganud kuulujutte, et see aasta Rally Estonia on WRC arvestuses viimane, ei teagi mis sellest arvata aga head meelt ka ei tekita Äkki 2029 saame uuesti ...

Kütusehindadest ka natukene, ehk et kui Rally2 auto võtab sajale u. 60l kütet, teeb see 100 km läbimise hinnaks 600 Euri..... Jube kalliks ikka aetud see nn. "roheline"

Suht ok kokkulepe. Aga stiilis f.... hankook tyre saab ikkagi trahvi. Huvitav kas nüüd F1 ka sõidab selle tuules?
