Yaris To Take On The 2012 WRC
Toyota will be making a comeback to the WRC stage in 2012 with the Yaris (named Vitz in Japan) being the top choice for Toyota!
Critical: length of the Vitz RS
Yaris has always been committed to participating in the WRC. The only obstacle was the regulation of minimum length of 3900mm for WR cars, which has now been cleared by the release of the 1.5RS (3930mm), with the base model at 3885mm. All that remains now is the development of a 1.6ℓ turbo engine. Participation in the 2012 WRC seems pretty concrete. If Toyota makes a comeback to the WRC, it will be the first time after 13 years where they had brilliant results, winning the manufacturer’s crown in 1999.
Yaris WRC
The minimum length requirement for the WRC is 3900mm, which Toyota Yaris 1.5RS managed to clear with 3930mm—this is a 45mm addition to the base model’s length, thanks to the installation of a customised bumper. The body width barely made the regulation of 1820mm. This gives its body an aggressive stance, while retaining the image of the base model. With the addition of Subaru staff to the team, there is ample opportunity to make the cut for the opening race in 2012.
There have been changes in the WRC regulations where the cars have to run with 1.6ℓ turbo engine and 4WD, and measure a total length of at least 3990mm, and width no longer than 1820mm. With these regulations, Citroen has replaced the C4 with the DS3, Ford has announced the Fiesta to take over the Focus. Mini has also announced their entry, partnering with Prodrive, and will compete in 6 of the 13 rounds.
The WRC seems set to be on a decline with the unparalled speed of Citroen with Sebastien Loeb, but with the bold changes in regulations by the FIA, the WRC expected to be jazzed the entries of new cars.
Increasing European market share
With the Yaris as the most popular B-segment car in Europe, it is expected to be a fast selling car, with successful advertising slogans such as “My beloved car, the champion car”.
Last July, the Chairman of Toyota Motorsport, Yamashina, mentioned in a press conference that “We are scouting for suitable WRC and GT drivers,” and, “Racing activities in Europe is important. The European manufacturers are adept in tying up races and commercial cars”.
Before Toyota participated in F1, it only had two percent worth of shares in the Europe market. The situation improved to 5.8 percent in 2007, but dropped to 4.4 percent presently due to their absence in the significant motorsports scene. Little wonder that they consider participation in the motorsports scene as an important marketing move.
Additionally, Toyota has added several Subaru staff members into their development team for the Yaris. With the TMG (Toyota Motorsports GmbH) pulling out from the F1, the emphasis towards motorsports seems to have been refocused with the entry into the WRC.
This however, brings about the dilemma of whether to compete as Team Toyota, or to develop and manufacture a WR car, and to market it to a privateer. It would seem that creating and marketing the WR car would be much more effective in utilizing the 300 TGM staff as compared to racing as Team Toyota.
There is a tendency to think that privateer teams are small and weak, but there are many privateer teams that can easily rival European teams, and there are also rumours that Petter Solberg are in talks with some of them. It would be an interesting sight to see the skillful privateers pair up with the technical abilities of Toyota and TGM.
It would be exciting to see the Yaris challenge at the WRC, with the addition of the 1.6ℓ turbo engine. Whether it is the Evo or the Impreza, a compact car with an affordable pricing would be advantageous not only to motorsports but will serve as a solution to a much bigger problem: many people now are giving up on car ownership.

Raha oleks neil olemas, probleem hoopis teist laadi. ( Üks Venemaalt pärit härrasmees oleks meeledi nõus abistama, kuid Rootsi valitsusele ei meeldi mõte nende automargi venelaste kätte jõudmisest.)hull kirjutas:Saab´i projektis kahtlen küll väga.
