Ott Tanak has credited his mentor Markko Martin, a winner of five world championship events, for his emergence in world rallying.
The 22-year-old from Estonia is one of five young drivers taking part in the Pirelli Star Driver scheme on six rounds of this year’s World Rally Championship. He claimed his back-to-back Estonian titles with Martin’s MM Motorsport team, for whom he also works as a mechanic.
“He has been a very good teacher for me and I have learned a lot from him so far,” said Tanak. “I just hope I can make the most of that experience because this year is very important for me.”
Tanak is the only Pirelli Star Driver still running on Rally of Turkey after an impressive performance at the wheel of a Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X. After eight stages, he is 10th overall and leading Group N alongside co-driver Kuldar Sikk.
“I have only been driving at 70 per cent today trying not to make any mistakes and so far it is going okay,” said Tanak. “But I know the stages will be very rough tomorrow so I know it won’t be easy.”
