WRC 2010 sporting regulations
Motorsport's governing body, the FIA, has announced a series of decisions about the World Rally Championship's sporting regulations for 2010 and has agreed to delay a number of other changes until at least 2011.
The decisions were made at a meeting of the World Motor Sport Council held today in Paris. Here are the most significant developments:
Stage distances
Next year there will be no minimum or maximum individual special stage distance. However, there will be a maximum of 80 kilometres of special stages between service halts. The special stage distance of a World Rally Championship event has been revised to become between 300 kilometres and 500 kilometres.
Service Park
Throughout each rally there shall be one main service park. Organisers may however submit to the FIA promotional justification to support relocation during the rally. In addition, the service park can be redesigned to permit access from the rear of each team’s service area. This will allow spectators to be closer to the action.
World Rally Championship for Manufacturers
All competing cars, including existing WRC cars, are eligible for the FIA World Rally Championship for Manufacturers. Registered Manufacturers must enter two WRC cars in all rounds and use 2009 homologated cars.
WRC Teams
Known this year as 'Manufacturer Teams' (for instance the Munchi's Ford World Rally Team), WRC teams must participate in at least eight nominated rounds, including one outside the European Economic Area and Turkey, with one or two cars of any eligible class. They may enter one or two cars homologated prior to 2009.
Night stages
Subject to satisfactory levels of safety, night stages are permitted but must not form the whole itinerary of the day.
Shakedown location
Shakedown may take place on part of a stage of the rally (as it did this year on the Rally de Espana).
Maximum lateness
The maximum lateness between two time controls has been extended from 15 to 30 minutes. However the lateness for the day remains at 30 minutes.
The World Motor Sport Council also agreed to defer the introduction of a number of other suggested amendments to the regulations, including:
Teams' Championship
The possibility of the Manufacturers’ Championship becoming a Teams’ Championship is deemed more appropriate for 2011, when the new World Rally Car technical regulations are introduced.
Shakedown
It was decided that further debate was required on the merit of changing Shakedown to a promotional and media opportunity, and the possibility of it becoming a start order for the top crews.
Tyre compounds
The option of two tyre compounds remains under discussion with the single tyre supplier.
End of day podium
A podium at the end of each day is pending the resolution of a Bonus Points system. A further study is required for the Drivers’ World Ranking to be compatible with the current Championship points listing.
