Stage Flash 7 - 14.05.05 10:30
Loeb has no problems.
Duval said he had no problems and that SS7 was okay.
Gardemeister: “No problems. The stages are much better than yesterday and the car’s running cooler.”
Kresta: there was an unspecified rubbing noise coming from the area of the rear left wheel he went into SS8.
Solberg did not restart this morning. The Team withdraw him due to concern about the Impreza’s engine. Team Principal David Lapworth said, “The air filter became heavily clogged with sand and gravel on SS4 and running in this condition for many kilometres caused a number of concerns and was the cause of Petter’s problems at the start of SS6. In the circumstances, we felt it would be better to withdraw and be ready to challenge for victory in Greece rather than compromise our chances by aiming for a points finish here with a question mark over the extent of the damage to this engine.”
Atkinson: “SS7 was okay but there was a lot of gravel because I was only the second car through.”
Grönholm: the 307 was pushed into parc fermé last night. The car would not start this morning, so it was pushed over the start and into service. The car did not leave service, so although Marcus did start the rally this morning, he has retired again. The car has two bent valves as a result of the cam belt’s breaking in SS1 yesterday. As the engine is sealed and the mechanics are not allowed to remove the head, they are attempting to straighten the valves by removing the manifold and using thin levers.
Martin had a front right puncture. Beef Park said, “SS7 was like a motorway compared to yesterday.”
Rovanperä has no problems this morning Said SS7 was much better to drive.
Panizzi said he had lots of wheel spin in SS7. The car is under-steering at the front and difficult to drive.
Schwarz found SS7 smoother than yesterday’s stages but more slippery. He said his engine doesn’t look good. He changed a damaged front left wheel before going into SS8.
Tuohino found SS7 much better than yesterday’s stages. Said they had changed the car’s settings but there is still much work to do.
Solberg: Co-driver Menkerud said, “SS7 was so slippery that we nearly spun.”
Warmbold had to stop to disconnect a broken rear anti-roll bar after SS7 but arrived at the start of SS8 in good time.
Stohl has no problems and said the stages are better.
Carlsson: all his problems, that eventually caused his retirement at refuelling after SS6, emanated from a broken driveshaft. This overstressed the front differential, which overheated, causing hydraulic failure. After appears to have no problems this morning, finding SS7 smoother but looser than yesterday’s stages.
Benik has retired from the rally because his co-driver became disenchanted and has gone home.
Tsouloftas said, “It’s very good. I am much happier today.”
COMMENT:
The Stewards allocated the stage time of Car 45 (Errani) to all the cars that were delayed when SS4 was stopped due to the fire in Car 37 (Higgins).
